i shudder to use the term 'EDM' and i am suspicious of anyone who uses it.


i've yet to read Matthew Adell (ceo of Beatport)'s Ask Me Anything but that guy has dance music in his heart and blood. for now.

electronic music was here before downloads, and will remain here after these irresponsible trendy dubstep-loving co-opters go away. these days, it's as if people don't remember the first dance music wave (as we currently know it) that hit in the early part of the century. remember trance music? it too subsided, but the undercurrent remained. and back then, there was Las Vegas but 'twas nothing like the LAS VEGAS of today...

so i ♥ you, Matthew Adell! and thanks to Digital Music News for the above quote,  in response to some idiot who tried to politely state how electronic music is a fad.

Vince Clarke + Martin Gore x Überzone = YES

Mute Records announced an upcoming collaboration between two of my and many others' (especially those who grew up as i did, in the 80s) personal heroes, Vince Clarke and Martin Gore called VCMG.

This weekend Alx and i ran into Q aka Überzone, described as "the influential Californian electronic artist" in the above link, who has been busy in the studio mixing the album for VCMG!  It comes out in spring 2012.

RIP Andy Hughes of the Orb

with all the MJ news yesterday, today and forever, "and ever and ever and ever and ever"...it is with great shock and sadness that i have learned of the death of ANDY HUGHES, formerly of the Orb.

there's a period of my life marked by brilliant and wonderful dance music records. even into the late 1990's, so many albums were life changing for me, cos the artists and producers of the dance music world were just hitting their stride. that's where the classic 'Toxygene' came in, off the Orblivion album.

pure beauty. in between all the MJ stuff, or even instead of, give it a listen. i swear that train whistle is from BANCO DE GAIA's 'Last Train to Lhasa'.

MUSIC: Carmen Rizzo and Bajofondo

i've heard los angeles/hollywood-based CARMEN RIZZO played and mentioned over the years on KCRW, and he's equally revered by evening DJ's Bentley, Campos AND Trinidad. the man's production is pretty spot-on, and this record, 'The Ornament of an Imposter' on his own Electrofone Records, has some great sounds coming out of it. it has vocals (not so requisite, in my opinion) on top of electronics that border on the moody and and trancey (the slow meditative kind, not the hands-in-the-air kind). it's original stuff, but you might not agree cos you didn't realise you've heard him before:

As a musician, producer, remixer, and writer, Carmen Rizzo is a fixture in album credits, and his eclectic career has seen him working with an incredible range of artists, including Paul Oakenfold, BT, Esthero, Alanis Morissette, KD Lang to Seal, Coldplay, Pete Townsend, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and even the Cirque du Soleil."

Thanks to Spectre Promotion for that blurb. oh yeah, and don't forget his work with his 'bands' NIYAZ and LAL MERI. he's got a lot of stuff going on. awesome album.

next up is BAJOFONDO, who i believe are from Argentina, cos they are definitely a tango band playing in the electronica world. yes, everyone loves the Gotan Project, but THIS album, 'Mar Dulce' freaking blows Gotan out of the water. each song is interesting, not cheesy and necessary. and the songs keep coming: there are SEVENTEEN tracks on the album!
